Gum diseases are serious conditions that can start with bleeding, swelling, recession and bad breath, and progress all the way to tooth loss. At Papirus Dental in Fethiye, you can learn more about gum treatment and modern solutions with our Periodontology Specialist Dt. Özge Uysal.
What Are Gum Diseases? Symptoms and Treatment Methods
Gum diseases often begin with mild bleeding from the gums but, if left untreated, can turn into a serious condition that progresses to tooth loss and resorption of the jawbone. Studies show that gum inflammation is very common in the general population and often goes unnoticed for a long time.
At Papirus Dental in Fethiye, together with our specialist in gum diseases and surgery Dt. Özge Uysal, we offer both preventive and therapeutic solutions to our patients. In this article, we will explain what gum diseases are, their symptoms and which treatment methods are used, in a clear and understandable way.
What Are Gum Diseases?
Gum diseases are inflammatory conditions affecting the gums (gingiva) that surround your teeth and the bone structures that support these tissues. Basically, the process begins with:
- Bacterial plaque accumulating on the tooth surfaces
- This plaque hardening over time and turning into tartar (calculus)
- The inflammatory response that the body mounts against this build-up
If plaque is not removed by regular and effective brushing and flossing, it creates the basis for gum disease.
The early stage of this process is called gingivitis (gum inflammation), while the advanced stage with bone loss is called periodontitis.
1. Gingivitis (Gum Inflammation)
Gingivitis is the early and reversible form of gum disease. The most common symptoms are:
- Red, swollen and tender gums
- Bleeding during brushing or flossing
- Occasional bad breath
At this stage there is no permanent loss of supporting tissues (such as bone). With proper oral hygiene and professional cleaning, gingivitis can be completely brought under control.

2. Periodontitis (Advanced Gum Disease)
If gingivitis is not treated, the inflammation can spread from the gums to the deeper tissues and the jawbone. This condition is called periodontitis, and irreversible tissue loss is present:
- Gum recession
- Gaps between the teeth
- Loosening or shifting of the teeth
- More obvious bad breath
- Tooth loss in advanced cases
At this stage, brushing well is no longer enough. Specialist examination and advanced periodontal treatment are required.
3. Diseases Around Implants (Peri-implant Mucositis and Peri-implantitis)
Patients who have had implant treatment, the tissues around the implants can also be affected in a way similar to gum disease:
- Peri-implant mucositis: Inflammation limited to the soft tissue around the implant, accompanied by redness and bleeding.
- Peri-implantitis: A more advanced and risky stage in which bone loss is also present together with inflammation.
For this reason, regular check-ups and professional cleaning are extremely important for patients with dental implants.
At Papirus Dental Fethiye, when inflammatory tissue or bone loss develops around an implant, we aim to restore the implant and surrounding tissues to health before the implant is lost.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?
In the early stages, gum diseases are often painless and therefore may be unnoticed. However, the presence of even one of the following signs should be considered a warning:
- Bleeding while brushing teeth or using dental floss
- Gums that constantly look red and swollen
- Bad breath, a metallic or bloody taste in the mouth
- Gum recession or teeth appearing longer than before
- Food getting stuck between the teeth, widening gaps
- A feeling that the teeth are loose or moving
- Swelling, bleeding or discharge around an implant
These symptoms are important for both classic gum diseases and problems around implants.
Risk Factors That Predispose to Gum Disease
Gum disease does not progress with the same severity in everyone; some people are more prone because of structural, systemic or environmental reasons, such as:
- Poor oral hygiene and irregular brushing
- Smoking
- Uncontrolled diabetes and certain systemic diseases
- Pregnancy and hormonal changes
- Genetic predisposition
- Stress and other conditions that weaken the immune system
Recent studies suggest significant relationships between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease, diabetes and adverse pregnancy outcomes (such as preterm birth and low birth weight).
Therefore, gum diseases should not be viewed only as “a dental problem” but as a health issue that concerns the whole body.

How Are Gum Diseases Treated?
The first step of treatment is a detailed examination and accurate diagnosis. At Papirus Dental Fethiye, our periodontologist follows these steps for patients who present with gum complaints:
1. Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation
- Measuring the depth of periodontal pockets
- Identifying sites of bleeding
- Assessing bone levels with radiographs when necessary
At this stage we determine whether the condition is gingivitis or periodontitis and in which areas it is concentrated.
2. Professional Cleaning and Root Surface Smoothing | Curettage
In mild and moderate cases:
- Removal of plaque and tartar (scaling / detartrage)
- Smoothing of the root surfaces (root surface debridement / root planing – curettage)
help to control most of the inflammation. When combined with correct home care, many patients experience significant improvement with these measures.

3. Surgical Gum Treatments
In advanced periodontitis cases, cleaning alone may not be sufficient. In such situations, more advanced procedures may be required, such as:
- Gum surgery under local anaesthesia
- Cleaning the root surfaces under direct vision (flap operation)
- Bone reshaping or bone grafting procedures when necessary
The treatment plan is prepared individually according to each patient’s condition.
4. Supportive Therapy and Follow-up
Gum diseases belong to the group of chronic conditions that require follow-up even after treatment. For this reason:
- Regular check-up appointments
- Repeating scaling when needed
- Ongoing oral hygiene instruction and reinforcement are essential.
If regular follow-up is neglected, the disease can silently progress again.
